“Detecting the Domestic Soundscape in the ‘Age of Noise’: Alcott, Green, Campbell, Gilman”, in In-scriptum, 6/2025, pp. 27-44.

This essay aims to demonstrate the uniqueness of the female experience with sound and listening in a period spanning the second half of the 19th century and the early 20th century. The domestic soundscape reveals the depth of gender inequality both inside and outside the home and exposes a series of psychological abuses perpetrated against women. Despite their stylistic differences, these four authors interpret, sometimes with the voice of the neo-Gothic and sometimes with the voice of the detective story, the dense network of acoustic instruments—physical and technological—that help women in their investigations, demands, and daily struggle for survival.

Il saggio intende dimostrare la singolarità dell’esperienza femminile per quanto concerne la sonorità e l’ascolto in un periodo che comprende la seconda metà dell’800 e i primi anni del 900. Il paesaggio sonoro domestico rivela la profondità delle disparità di genere fuori e dentro la casa e mostra una serie di violenze psicologiche perpetrate ai danni delle donne. Queste quattro autrici pur nelle loro diversità stilistiche interpretano ora con la voce del neogotico ora con la voce del poliziesco la fitta rete di strumenti acustici – fisici e tecnologici – che concorrono ad aiutare le donne nelle loro indagini, rivendicazioni, e lotta quotidian per la sopravvivenza.
